What’s Your Why?

Life update: I joined an Advisory Board 🙂

More specifically, I joined the board of an organization near and dear to my heart: Oasis for Girls. OFG empowers girls by helping them cultivate the skills, knowledge, and confidence to discover their dreams and build strong futures. They provide school and summer programs for young women of color, ages 14-18, from under-resourced communities in San Francisco.

The non-profit is led by a truly inspiring group of women. During the interview process, I was struck by a recurring theme: the importance of describing “your why.” This question is central to the board’s approach, both in evaluating new members and in reflecting on their own motivations. The board is a working board, meaning the members are engaged in the execution of tasks and initiatives, in addition to decision-making. On challenging days, remembering your “why” can provide crucial motivation for the level of involvement expected of us.

I have volunteered with Oasis for Girls since I moved to San Francisco five years ago, but until now, I hadn’t fully articulated my “why” for being involved with them. My “why” is rooted in my belief that when women—especially girls—have strong networks of support, incredible things happen. I often feel like the women in my life are my biggest champions.

At One Wealth Advisors, I’ve been working with Frank, my mentor in our mentorship program, to define my personal values both in and outside of the workplace. I have enjoyed this exercise as a deeper exploration of my “why” as I navigate my daily work, relationships with loved ones, and my involvement in the community.
