Lately, I’ve been going through a stretch of time that looks different than I imagined it would. Life doesn’t always turn out the way we planned, and honestly, I’ve been more in my head than usual, stuck overthinking and second-guessing things I can’t change. I’ve been learning how to sit with that while finding my way back to the things that make me feel most like me.
A few days ago, my best friend sent me a video about the “art of getting to the line,” and something about the idea really stuck with me. The premise was simple: when you’re having an off game, you don’t need to make the perfect shot. Sometimes you just need to get to the line and take a few free throws. For me, those free throws have looked like running again, which has always made me feel free, and going back to SoulCycle, where I can get lost in the rhythm of the music. I’ve also started doing little things outside my usual routine: grabbing a coffee and sitting by the water, going to the park after work to people-watch, or calling a friend just to talk about our days.
None of this magically fixes what I’m working through, and some days getting back on the bike or going for a run feels harder than I remember. But I’m learning the point isn’t to immediately be where I was before, or to look back. It’s to keep looking forward.
Maybe that’s the whole thing, not having it all figured out, but continuing to show up for the small things that make us feel like ourselves, one free throw at a time.
