Embracing the Unknown (With a Plan in Hand)

The only thing certain in life? Uncertainty.

As a parent, I’m reminded of this constantly. I never really know which version of my kids is going to show up each morning or which one might get sent home from school midday with a suspicious cough or mystery rash. Just the other night, my daughter woke up crying about a bug bite she got the day before. She didn’t want medicine. She just wanted comfort, and to fall back asleep with her feet gently resting by my face. While I try to cherish those moments, I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t mind a full night’s sleep.

At the same time, my wife and I are both working professionals. A single calendar disruption, whether from a kid, a client, a family member, or a curveball email, can flip the entire week on its head. But that’s life. There’s no playbook. Just your mindset, your plan, and how you respond.

At One Wealth, we never pretend we can predict the future – because we can’t. But we can build a thoughtful, data-informed, resilient game plan. One that helps you adapt when life doesn’t go according to script. That’s really what planning is: reducing the anxiety of the unknown by preparing for what’s reasonably foreseeable – and knowing how you’ll navigate what isn’t.

Even now, we’re working with clients who can be on opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. Some are deeply anxious about what lies ahead. Others are feeling incredibly optimistic. Our job isn’t to pick a side. It’s to serve as a steady, objective sounding board – one that helps clients anchor their decisions in something sturdier than headlines or gut feelings.

Over the years, we’ve seen that clients who stick to a disciplined plan, even when the world gets messy, tend to sleep better at night and stay more grounded during turbulent times. And that doesn’t just apply to investing. It applies to parenting, relationships, careers, and everything else that gets thrown at you before coffee.

So no, we can’t control what life brings. But we can control how we prepare, how we respond, and how we support each other along the way.
